One of the most common questions we hear from new expat patients is: "How often should I be getting my teeth cleaned here in Thailand?" The short answer is every 6 months — but there are nuances worth knowing, especially with the Thai climate, diet, and if you're using SSO dental benefits.
The global dental consensus is a professional clean every 6 months. This applies whether you're in London, New York, or Paknam. Your dentist in Thailand will give you the same advice as your dentist back home — because the biology of plaque buildup and calculus formation doesn't change with geography.
At Apical Dental Clinic, a standard cleaning appointment includes:
Teeth cleaning (scaling and polishing) at Apical Dental Clinic costs 500–800 THB depending on the amount of tartar buildup. This is a fraction of UK costs (typically £60–£120 for an NHS clean, £80–£200 private). If you have Thai SSO benefits, scaling is fully covered within your 900 THB annual dental allowance.
For patients who clean regularly every 6 months, the procedure is typically painless or mildly uncomfortable at most. If it's been a year or more, there may be more sensitivity during the process — especially around the gumline — but this passes quickly. Our team works gently and will always stop if you need a break.
Your teeth may feel slightly sensitive for 24–48 hours after a thorough clean, especially if significant tartar was removed. Your gums may also look slightly more red immediately after — this is normal and resolves within a day. Most patients notice their teeth feeling noticeably smoother and their breath fresher immediately after.
